Tape Project #1

I was inspired by Alvin Lucier's composition "I am sitting in a room" from 1969. I created a tape loop that spanned the wall out and back to the two reel to reel players. This piece became more of a sculpture than anything else. It worked for a little bit. Then one of R2R's broke.

There was a microphone in between the tape machines and whatever was heard in the room was recorded through that microphone into the R2R on the right. Then, the audio traveled around the wall and into another R2R. Both R2Rs were playing the audio and one was recording as well. Since they were reading the tape at different points, it created a delay. When the audio was played back into the room, it was rerecorded through the microphone. Over time, the audio became less recognizable as natural sounds and more like tones and various waves.

I really appreciate that I anthropomorphized the tape players.
